Recently I was approached by Cruzin Magazine to do a photo shoot for their latest issue. I started pursuing pin up modelling from early 2010 in order to compete in the Miss Pin Up Australia competition, since then the opportunities to grow in the industry have been incredible!

I am truly grateful to those who have made this possible and from the support of friends, family and other wonderful pin ups in the industry. You instantly know genuine people that surround you from their level of encouragement and support.

The message I have to all those wanting to pursue a career in any industry to never lose faith in your own abilities and believe that what you want will come in time, no matter the ups and downs everything happens for a reason.

Where and Who are they?

The Collective Store is located in Wynnum, Queensland. They are a handmade boutique store filled to the brim with handmade and unique Australian products.

What makes The Collective Store stand out?

Simply put - great customer service, products that radiate love and owners with a passion for what they do.

How often have you walked into a retail store, couldn't find the staff to ask a question and when you did they were rude and put out that you even found them. This is something I have found that many retail stores and chains are really lacking - great service and passion for what they do. Which is why so many shoppers hate going out, dealing with bad service and not finding what they want.

Outlets like The Collective Store are different and there is a reason for it. I cherish when I walk into a store filled with love - from the products being sold down to the people that work there. You feel welcome and at home as soon as you set foot inside and could browse the endless range of unique products for hours. This is exactly what The Collective Store has created.

How did it all start?

Leonie McIntosh is the owner and creative mind behind The Collective Store.  

“As a hobbyist silversmith I had found it almost impossible to make my craft even a tiny bit profitable. Galleries and boutiques charge too much commission, markets can either be too expensive when you sign up for designer markets or depressing when you are competing with stallholders who deal in imported, inferior products but who seem to be making money hand-over-fist. Online selling is difficult for jewellery because it’s such a tactile product; it really needs to be seen first-hand to be judged for weight, size, texture and quality”

This is how The Collective Store came into fruition.

It's “a marketplace for high-quality products handmade in Australia. I envisioned a community of independent artists, crafters and designers bringing beautiful handmade products to the general public by way of a fresh, fun, co-operative wrapped in a gorgeous little boutique – a shopping oasis!”

October is jam packed full of Miss Rockabilly events and promotion! I have been flat out lately creating product for stockists, Miss Pin Up Australia prize packs and other events.

It's nearly Greazefest time! This will be my first Greazefest markets and it is very exciting! I'm sharing my stall with Journal Addicition - she has lots of pin up inspired journals and she also custom created a couple of journals with my original artwork as the cover! I'm excited to launch them exclusively at the markets!

I have been busy sewing in my free time, getting a few aprons finished for Sunday and also hair clips, necklaces and resin goodies. The problem with this craft is I could just keep making and making stock! Too many ideas and not many days now!

Greazefest at Rocklea Showgrounds on the 7th of August is fast approaching. I've been organising displays, products and other fun stuff over the last few weeks but it always seems that I never have enough time to keep up with ideas!

Here are some of my latest goodies. I just love working with resin and hope I can do more to incorporate these into my bows etc soon.

As an addition to my accessories and jewellery I should also have a few aprons and rockabilly bunting available on the day. I also have one of my pin up drawings being turned into journals! Very exciting times. Hope to see some fan faces there!

Deep and Meaningful?

Well I've been quite flat out lately but It's time to write on my blog! Work full time is flat out and it doesn't leave me much time to create. But I've had quite a few adventures over the last week or so!

To start it all off I had a ball meeting some lovely new people at the judging of Miss Pin Up Australia live heats down at Tweed Seagulls on the 10th of June. The contestants were also simply stunning! Such grace, poise, wonderful pin up posing and outfits! It is so wonderful to see vintage outfits and girls embracing what they have been given. There were lots of hard decisions to be made, but at the same time judging was just too much fun! There were lovely highlights I will remember forever. Here are some pictures.

I also had the pleasure to finally make it up to The Collective Store in Wynnum. Much to my Sat Nav's annoyance. I don't even know if I should buy one after it took me to a completely wrong address and added an hour to my trip after work... not to mention the wasted fuel! It was exactly like an advert on TV recently where it says to go straight ahead into water... well I ended up somewhere near a beach... not happy Jan! I don't care if you tell me 'you have reached your destination' that was not the address I typed in at the start!

Enough on that rant... The Collective Store has so many wonderful handmade goodies I didn't know where to look! I also got to drop in some resin jewellery. Will be great to see how that goes in store.

In other news I am slowly preparing stock for Greazefest in Rocklea on the 7th of August. I am sharing a stall with Journal Addiction. It should be a great day filled with markets, hot rods and pin ups! And food... I'm going to need that while I'm up there!

Miss Pin Up Australia Live Heats 2011

What exciting news!! This Friday night at Tweed Seagulls I have the amazing opportunity to judge the Miss Pin Up Australia Live Heats for 2011. I can't wait to see the glamourous ladies that have entered this year strut their stuff on stage. Contestants from all states are invited to participate this year and will go straight through with their state title to the final! I can't wait to see what they come up with for the talent section. It is always a fun-filled evening also with a live rockabilly band.

Tickets are on sale at Cooly Rocks On. The competition coincides with the Cooly Rocks On festival happening until June 13th throughout Tweed an Coolangatta. Bands, Markets, Hot Rods... who could ask for more!

Garterbelts and Gasoline Festival 2011

Finally. I managed to get some photos off the camera from the Garterbelts and Gasoline festival on Mount Tamborine the other weekend. I also got to model my first Miss Rockabilly clothing creation - Cherry Print Skirt with red satin bow.

Pity the petticoat underneath kept slipping. I must invest in a fluffier high quality one. If anyone knows of good quality petticoat suppliers please let me know! It might become like a handbag and shoe obessesion - one of every colour!

Hopefully there are still tickets at the door for the Rockabilly night at the pub. Sunday should also be a great day... I am looking forward to seeing all the hot rods at the showgrounds with a photo shoot lined up with the fabulous Helen McLean! Very exciting.

So my resin journey begins... After my much loved course in Brisbane, I won't be able to stop! I have even ordered more colours and casts just so I have more range.

Here is how I am going at the moment.... My creative mess! As you can see there are feathers and resin everywhere.

Something I must do! I admire her taking photos while getting waxed at the same time. Now that is talent!

Personally, I've always had thick eyebrows and thanks to the advice and experience of my mum, I'm going to keep them that way. I want to still have some hairs there and with a shape when I'm 50. Since it's one of my favourite trends over the last year and seems to be hanging around I thought I'd share my bit about the resurgence of nautical fashion!

As much as stripes can be downright scary to wear there are many nautical options for a lazy summer's day! It’s autumn here in Australia but currently we are having very hot days… it must be a catch up from all our rain the last few months.

Nautical can be pulled off by anyone! When I think nautical I don’t just think stripes I think of France, Vintage, Red, White, Blue! The brilliant thing about this fashion trend is that it's so versatile and you can play it up or down for any occasion. In the image below I have selected a few items which give off a nautical flair and most are handmade and found on Etsy! I just love supporting handmade as well as finding quirky, vintage and different items to promote.

For the daring... why not try bold spaced stripes in a dress? This option is from Pyxus Passion Project. Bold spaced stripes can help ward off the fashion police. Bold spaced stripes show off your curves in a different light compared to close horizontal stripes which make you look instantly wider.

Nautical trends have been around for a long time and the great thing about fashion fads and phases, means that it will never go out of style if you have the right collection. Even seen in a 1950s swimsuit advertisement, nautical shines through. Speaking of swimsuits and the beach, I also found this lovely beach bag tote in red and white from Bayan Hippo.

And if you are convinced that nautical themed fashion hasn't been around all that long, have a look at Marilyn Monroe. She pulled off stripes in casual wear and nautical inspired outfits at the beach!

Thinking of trying nautical but not so traditional? How about a Navy jumpsuit. Inspired by 1960s fashion, you can find one of these unique pieces from Miss Hussy Clothing. I also found these gorgeous vintage suede navy shoes that would compliment all nautical outfits! Have a look at Becky Drolen.

To accessorize in nautical think sailors, ships, swallows and anchors! I found a cute swallow necklace from Oh Deer as well as an anchor hair clip and earring set by myself - Miss Rockabilly.

Well I've been meaning to... and I'm glad I did! Over the weekend I popped in to Kitty's Vintage & Kitsch on Tamborine Mountain. That's right, Gold Coast and Brisbane followers... If you love vintage this gorgeous shop is a destination of choice for you!

I picked up 2 wonderful 1950s vintage outfits and the lovely Sue couldn't be more helpful! I can't wait to put them on and hit the town. When I get a chance I will post some images. I think I would die. There is just something about creating that not only takes away the daily grind for me, it is the greatest sense of accomplishment and brings a smile to my face

And I am definitely a Right Brained person. Here is a quick test to find out what you are. Are you Left or Right?

I love finding new ways of doing things and improving my product range. Sometimes I have that many new ideas I don't know where to start!
I believe if I can create something I love, chances are someone else will adore it too!
Sometimes I do things purely with my heart and sometimes the business side can get a bit lost.

This week I will be focusing on some custom pieces and also on my drawings! Yep... pin up girl drawings coming soon. Originally I wanted to be an animator after school but when I got turned down for a university course, what I should have done was push forward, take it on the chin and keep at it. Instead, the worst thing you could do in that situation is exactly what I did... I gave up. I thought that was it for my drawing and artistic skills. This year I have decided, in amongst all other creative things, to keep at it and refine my style. So stay tuned for my original pin up art soon!

New Directions...

Well the new plans for 2011 are going well! I have started drawing again and can't believe I stopped. It is just such a wonderful hobby and whenever I have a second I love to scribble! So far I have drawn up a few pin up girls inspired from 50s artists. I have finished one and started on my second... My second has been hampered a little by my dog deciding to fall asleep on her! But she will look brilliant in a few days!

I am also working on my first 1950s pencil dress. It is going to be amazing. It has been fun to try to follow the pattern. There has been a little unpicking but most has run smoothly! It is just about finding that balance between work and hobby time!

I will try to upload my pin up girls and dress progress pics next week! Everything is flowing nicely.

A Creative Odyssey...

Thanks to Jess from Epheriell Designs for starting the Blog Hop! It has been wonderful to read the goals and ambitions of like minded crafters over the last two weeks. With over 40 Blogs to hop through daily it has been fun. My fellow blogger for today is Moags & Smeet - lots of gorgeous jewels over that way so check them out!

Last night was the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets. It was my first market in Brisbane and with the group. I was madly making stock this week as most of my stock has been sold over Christmas or at The Collective Store in Wynnum! Here are some images from the night. I had a Coop spot to test how Miss Rockabilly would sell.

Two Thousand and Ten... it was a whirlwind for the development of Miss Rockabilly. Many years ago I started my crafting dream with Noogal Creations - handmade feather jewellery, and not too long ago I stumbled across the Rockabilly and Pin Up culture. I was so inspired by the art of Gil Elvgren that I decided to make my own brand, which is how Miss Rockabilly came about. There are a few things that have also pushed me to launch MR - 1. Cheap China imports and how I loathe them, 2. Inspiring the mindset of young women - taking on the values and style of women in the 1950s and buying handmade.

Launch the Miss Rockabilly clothing range

This won't be the easiest of tasks as I am a self taught sewer, but I have been slowly collecting some original 50s patterns for dresses and other items. I want to be able to introduce unique one-off pieces to the market inspired by everything Pin Up and Rockabilly. The main issue I can see that may arise when launching the MR clothing range will be Price. This is all a matter of changing the attitude of women to buy something individual and unique and not mass produced. Because the Pin Up and Rockabilly culture is so exclusive there is always a chance at an event that you will be wearing the same thing as someone else which is why I am excited to launch once I have sewn a few more items. Here is one style I am working on with a nautical twist!

Expand Miss Rockabilly product lines

In order to distinguish Miss Rockabilly further I want to add various product lines that incorporate MR designs. At present I specialise in Hair Accessories and Jewellery, next year I will be launching clothing and part of this I want to include some MR design t-shirts, promotional buttons, art prints and more goodies. Once I have a strong range of products I will look into web design etc. Right now Facebook, Etsy and Markets are my main outlets!

Participate in more Rockabilly Events & Markets
At the moment I have tried local Markets - Broadbeach Art and Craft as well as the BrisStyle Twilight markets. In 2011 I will be trying Wintersun, Camperdown Cruise and Greazefest - all Rockabilly and Pin Up specific. I did want to attend the Sydney Tattoo and Body Art Expo, Autumn Fest and Bright Rockabilly but they are all one week after another in March. When working full time, it is hard to get the time to make stock and attend interstate events every weekend so I will need to space 2011 and test to see what events work for Miss Rockabilly.

In 2010 I started MR with the launch of the Miss Pin Up Australia competition. I competed as Miss Marilyn McSweetie in Queensland. Since then I have also participated in the Pin Up Competition for the Gold Coast Hot Rod and Street Machine Spectacular in November. Yesterday was the Gold Coast Hot Rod Show at the Convention and Exhibition Centre! Marilyn McSweetie entered in the Pin Up Competition and loved it (in hot pink below)!

It seems more a Creative MESS rather than space. I really need a new desk! But sometimes the more mess the better... I seem to be able to put things together better this way... but also lose my scissors easier!

Well the weather was lovely and sunny for the first time in 3 weekends on the coast which made the broadbeach art and craft markets just that bit more special! We had a lovely day, I went along with Carol from Gorgie Millinery and we sold some goodies to passers by.

And... I ended up getting sunburnt.. who would have thought. Note to self for next markets - sunscreen!

I will be back there in time for Christmas with more goodies - promoting both Miss Rockabilly and Noogal Creations. I am also working on attending other markets in Queensland for the end of this year so stay tuned.

Here is a peek at our display... don't forget aussie buyers... it's not too far away from Melbourne Cup if you are going to a function and I just love Carol's hats! She still has a few left so be quick!

How I Made my Mini Sailor Hat!

Hi Everyone. Here is a little detail on how to create a sailor hat like the one I have just listed on Etsy. Unfortunately I didn't do the step by step imagery so you will just have to follow my descriptions until I make another.

1. The first thing I did was get my hands on some great Millinery Ivory felt and cut half off it up to the size I wanted to mould.
2. Then I found a small shaped object and moulded the felt to it's shape.
3. Then I had Carol's help from Gorgie Millinery with the stiffening of the hat so it held it's nice rounded shape
4. The next step was to wire the brim of the hat and add ribbon as well.
5. Once the hat had it's shape I then moved on to making a separate anchor hair clip that attaches to the hat. Just for something unique and versatile. Go all out with the hat or go understated nautical with the anchor bow.

The anchor buttons I had made especially from Voodoo Rabbit.
6. To make the hat sit in your hair I have sewn on a silver comb to one side of the hat under the rim. Since the rim of the hat can be bent to the desired shape you can put the anchor ribbon anywhere you like to suit how you want to wear it on your head.

Unfortunately my most recent market I was to attend didn't go to plan and I was bitterly disappointed and had to go home. I am looking into doing 3 more markets this year.. hopefully my first of those will be successful and not a shambles!

A Melbourne mother of four who dresses like a 1950s pin-up girl everyday is preparing to compete in a National beauty pageant celebrating old-school glamour. Rebeccah Jolley, 32, says being ladylike is a way of life and wears 1950s vintage clothing both at home and when going out about town. She will line up on Friday against 20 other vintage belles in the Miss Pin-Up Australia contest. Like most pageants there will be daywear, eveningwear, swimwear and talent categories. For the talent category Rebeccah says she will perform a sketch from 'I Love Lucy'. 'I'm quaking in my girdle,' she says. Whatever the outcome, she won't be ditching her heels for flats anytime soon.

Well as a last minute dash I got accepted into Miss Pin Up Australia - QLD Heats on this Friday night! A big stress to get all the accessories sorted but luckily I already had my outfits planned. The competition celebrates everything 50s and I have chosen a collection of day wear, evening, swim and lingerie that reflect my take on the competition. After modelling the outfits there is also a talent section and I will be performing a 50s song. It is an exciting time and also nerve-wracking! I will keep you posted with results for Marilyn McSweetie and Peaches St Claire from the evening. My outfits that will be worn have been inspired by the gorgeous Bettie Page. Branding Evolution

I started off with the idea to call the company Rockabilly Rebel. However much to my dismay relatives referred to the song when I mentioned it and the domain was already taken and registered in my state by someone completely different... so in order to be more unique I have chosen Miss Rockabilly. It was hard decision as ultimately I wanted it to have 2 'R's in the name but sometimes... I need to get over perfectionism!
